Own-account workers are independent workers without employees. Micro-enterprises are enterprises with 2-9 workers. Larger enterprises are enterprises with more than 10 workers.
The global and regional estimates have been calculated using ILO 2020 employment data in formal and informal enterprises.
The absolute total employment numbers for the world and regions were extrapolated based on proportions estimated from the analysis of 125 national representative labour force surveys signifying 90 per cent of global employment.
The percentage of country employment covered in the sample provides a comprehensive representation for most world regions: 85 per cent for Africa; 98 per cent for the Americas; 92 per cent for Asia and the Pacific; 84 per cent for Europe and Central Asia. The only exception is the Arab States for which only 30 per cent of total employment was represented by countries with available data.
For sector coverage, the analysis is based on real-time economic and financial data from the seven sectors most affected by the shock effects. These sectors were then matched with ILO sector employment statistics.
